Resources To Use in Your Program

Videos

Kateri Schrems has used Revolutionary Love a TED talk by Valerie Kaur, with their campus inclusion/diversity team, pastoral care team and several individuals. (This talk is referenced in Parker Palmer’s book On the Brink of Everything.)

This video is one of my favorites.Children doing Loving Kindness meditation:  children sending loving kindness to others. Excellent to teach Metta to children. I plan to show it after introducing Metta to adults because it’s so basic and reveals how love can be sent forth from us to others.

Mickey Reed writes:  “This video is quite a discussion starter and needs no translation! Iranian short film about empathy and compassion (just over 1 min.) It won an award at the Luxor Film Festival.)

Bobbi Bussan plans to use a film about the suffering redwood forests: Among Giants (from Global Oneness Project) “as a thought- starter for our soup supper. I will use it in a Circles of C eventually too. Works with Compassion and Creation – making a difference.”

You, The Christ Beautiful song and visuals; music by Ian Callanan, lyrics by Shirley Erena Murray, as found on the Carmelite Monastery of Baltimore website. Produced by Hope Publ. Co., Carol Stream, IL. For predominantly Christian groups: the video especially relates to BC Week 4, marginalized persons, could also be used with the Week 1 or 3. This video can open a study group, Circle of Compassion, a Four Day BC retreat or one day workshop, or other gathering related to compassion and justice issues.  (this video is slow to open up, but it’s worth it)  Lyrics here.

Brene Brown’s short YouTube on empathyis both informative and delightful. Could be used to begin conversation about this essential quality of compassion.

Other Resources

Free use of images and photos  Erin Matteson alerted me to this website that has a huge amount of visuals.

Mickey Reed introduced Kindness calendars with school age children in the humane education programs she is doing with her dog Shumi. She took the idea from this website.  Mickey writes: “After  talking about acts of kindness for ourselves, others, animals, and the earth  they get in groups and make their own versions of these. It’s a real hit and I think it might work with adults, as well.”
Song Like a Seed, by Sara Thomsen. I am enthralled with these new songs. They resonate with BC, particularly Week 5, compassion for creation – Water is LifeRiver Dream, and Canticle of the Feathered Ones, in particular. You can listen to them on her website & also download from there.

Self Compassion article  “Best Laid Plans” by Jen Hofman. This article contains a true story about how stress & lack of self-care seriously affected her plans.

Always immensely grateful for your compassionate presence and support of the BC program,

Joyce

Attending to Our Losses
Rather than “let go,” we need to attend to our own losses, as well as to the losses of others, with the utmost loving kindness, compassion, and patience. …When we experience grief, whether immediate, long-standing, or as the haunting background in our lives, loving kindness and compassion are true allies.
(The Magnanimous Heart, Narayan Helen Liebenson)
